The mission of the Zonta Club of Hanalei Foundation is to support charitable and educational programs on Kauai as well as that of Zonta International. The Foundation achieves this through effective fundraising, investment of funds, and the distribution of proceeds. Through its financial support of Zonta International programs, the Foundation becomes the catalyst for greater service to women throughout the world.

Scholarship Recipients


Kaitlyn Jarry, a four year valedictorian, just graduated from Kapaa High School with straight A's. While in H.S., she was a swimmer with the Mokihana Aquatics swim team, a member of the National Honor Society and been in the Interact Club for three years doing extensive volunteer activities for our community. Last summer, she participated in a summer Women's Technology Program at M.I.T. studying mechanical engineering. She will be attending Purdue University in Illinois in the fall with a major in Biomedical Engineering. After attaining an eventual Master's degree, she hopes to one day design prosthetics for the disabled or cornea implants for transplants and return to Hawaii to work in the biomedical engineering field. We are thrilled to offer Katlyn a $500 scholarship to help her attain her educational goals.

Cassandra Miyashiro was a previous Zonta of Hanalei scholarship winner when she graduated from Kapaa High School in 2009. Since then, she attended Heald College on Oahu with a 4.0 G.P.A. and then went to Windward Community College to complete her prerequisite courses in order to attend the Dental Hygiene Program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in the fall. After completing this program, she plans to return to Kauai to work as a dental hygienist in our community. We are pleased to help Cassandra reach her career goal with a $500 scholarship.

Our next amazing scholarship recipient is Danielle Ola, a graduate of Kauai H.S. with a 4.05 G.P.A. In high school, she participated in many volunteer activities as part of the Key Club and was active for several years in the Mock Trial Program, achieving the state championship in the 9th grade. An accomplished pianist who has won both state and national competitions, Danielle has been accepted to Stanford University with a full scholarship to major in International Relations with a minor in Modern Languages. Her eventual goal is to become a lawyer in International human rights law. A true Zontian at heart, Danielle is a proud recipient of a $500 scholarship.

Jana Rothenberg is a fascinating woman who has had a productive career for many years in corporate communications. For many years, she volunteered for the Children's Discovery Museum where she and the director of the museum designed and built an educational, ecologically interactive museum called "Kid's Kauai." An active ecologist for five years, she assisted in geological and ecological seminars through Kauai Nature Tours, and created an educational video story to attract volunteers to Kauai's Makauwahi Cave Reserve called "The Sink Hole" which has now gone viral on multiple websites. She is now pursuing a career in Industrial Video Production at K.C.C. where she has maintained a 4.06 G.P.A. A highly creative person and an example of Zontian goals, she is now working with the YWCA and the KCC Non-violence Task Force on a 4-part documentary series on stopping violence to women featuring women's stories of domestic abuse portrayed by actors. We are so proud to present Jana with our highest academic award, a $1000 scholarship.

Caycie Pascual just graduated from Island School with a 3.8 G.P.A. Her letter of reference refers to Caycie as a "delight, self confident, poised, and passionate." She will be attending CAL Poly in San Luis Obispo to pursue a degree in Biomedical Engineering and then further her education by ultimately obtaining a PHD in Pharmacology. She plans to eventually return to Kauai to open a pharmacy. In H.S., Caycie excelled in ballet and modern dance and was active in school government. She volunteered in the summers to teach dance to younger children for the Kauai Academy of Creative Arts and the Kauai Dance Center. For the National Honor Society, she volunteered as a tutor for elementary, middle and high school students. We wish Caycie the best and award her with a $500 scholarship.

Ira Lapitan recently graduated from Kauai High School with high grades, and will attend Portland State University in the fall. She is pursuing a career in Child and Family Counseling. Her volunteer work includes the "A+ Program," working with Kindergarten and 1st grade students, and over forty hours of community service for the Salvation Army and the Kauai Humane Society. Ira received the "Honor's Award" from the 9th through the 12th grade and excelled in Psychology and Economics courses. In her essays, Ira writes, "Coming from the Philippines and living with a single parent, I have had more responsibilities as I was growing up than other children have. My mother often had two jobs and my brother was left to take care of me and my younger sister." We are pleased to give Ira a $500 scholarship to achieve a hard-working goal to be the "first generation in her family to attend college."

Shealynna Ringor just graduated from Kauai High School, and was active in soccer and volleyball. She was in the National Honor Society in the 12th grade, and was involved with volunteer work in the Special Olympics, and at an orphanage in Tijuana, Mexico. She also volunteered as a counselor in Arizona in a camp for teens with disabilities. Shealynna admirably displays incredible passion and dedication to working with disabled persons. She will be attending Biola University in the fall and has chosen the career of communications Disorders which is a type of speech pathology that focuses on traumatic brain injuries and other disabilities that require rehabilitation. We are proud to present her with a $500 scholarship.

Kiah Shigeta-Koizumi is presently attending Oregon State University and pursuing a Psychology and Public Health Major. Her goal is to help people in Africa through education in the awareness of Aids and empowering women with better living and health conditions like safe drinking water, and general health education. She would like to work for the Red Cross or a private company in public health. During high school, she was very active in sports and helped coach for the American Youth Soccer Organization. She was also actively involved in the Japanese Club, Interact Club and the National Honor Society. Now she volunteers to help international students communicate on campus, and young girls participate in running events. Coming from a single parent background, Kiah says of herself in her essay, "I am more than what people make me. I am a young woman, yet a child at heart, a brick wall, an open mind and a field of dreams." We are pleased to present Kiah with a $500 scholarship.

Michelle Dubois is in her sophomore year at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California where she makes straight A's. Born and raised on Kauai, Michelle is a graduate of Kauai High and a former student at KCC. Currently, at Pepperdine, she is majoring in International Studies with an International Management concentration and minors in French and Non-Profit management. Michelle aspires to help develop AIDS centers across Sub-Saharan Africa where she plans to work in an administrative capacity in a nonprofit organization. She has already worked in Africa on three separate occasions and is only 23! These are lofty goals that fit perfectly with the Zontian Mission Statement: Advancing the Status of Women Worldwide. We are honored to award Michelle Dubois with a $1000 scholarship for the second year in a row! Congratulations, Michelle!

Barbara Brings is currently a student at K.C.C. where she intends to acquire a Certificate in Substance Abuse Counseling and then continue on to do her doctorate with specialization in Neuroscience and Art Therapy. She already holds a degree in Psychology and works with an organization called Nurse Finders. Barbara is a single mother with two children. Her son also attends K.C.C. where he is a straight A student. They frequently see each other on campus. She and her daughter volunteer at the Kauai Humane Society in the Healing Horses Equine Therapy Program. We are pleased to have Barbara and her family join us today and we are delighted to award Barbara a $500 scholarship.

Alia Weiss is in the Honors Program at U.H. Manoa where she is pursuing a degree in nursing. Alia is a very resourceful young lady, and being part of a blended family of nine, is determined to handle her college expenses independently. She has applied for, and been granted, the resident advisor position for Hale aloha Towers, which will take care of most of her dorm expenses for the immediate future. She has also been awarded a partial tuition-waiver from U.H. Manoa. We are delighted to help Alia by awarding her a $500 scholarship. Alia currently volunteers at Kapiolani Medical Center and is getting hands-on experience in her chosen profession. She will be the first in her family to graduate with a college degree. She intends to continue on to Graduate School when she is financially able. This is the second year that The Zonta Club of Hanalei has awarded Alia a scholarship, and we feel confident that she will accomplish whatever she sets out to achieve.

Whitney Rowe, a native Hawaiian, is currently attending Western Washington University with a major in Elementary Education and a minor in Language, Literacy and Cultural Studies. After acquiring a B.A. Degree, she plans to go to U.H. Manoa to attain a master's Degree to become more competitive in landing an Elementary Education teaching position on Kauai. She feels very strongly about empowering people with education. As the Vice President and one of three Hawaiians in the Hawaiian Club on campus, she loves to teach Hawaiian customs to the 25 club members. She is an excellent gourmet cook, and prepared fabulous dinners for her hard-working parents every night, and one time considered becoming a chef. Although Whitney could not be here today, her proud mother is here to accept her scholarship award of $500.

Scholarship Award Winners


Lyndsey Tom attends Pacific University in Oregon. Last spring, she graduated from Kapaa High School with an impressive G.P.A. of 3.98. As President of the National Honor Society, Treasurer of the Japanese Club, and co-captain of the tennis team, we found Lyndsey to be a well-rounded and deserving candidate. With the help of our scholarship, after graduating from college with a degree in chemistry, she intends to continue on to graduate school to study pharmacology. A Hui Ho Lyndsey!

Cassandra Miyashiro attends Heald College on Oahu and is studying to be a Dental Assistant and then a Dental Hygienist. She is a graduate of Kapaa High Schools’ 2009 class, and is a paddler and marathon runner. While studying on Oahu, Cass will be living with her aunt because rent in Honolulu is expensive. She is making her scholarship money stretch! Good luck Cass!

Dreana Valenciano attends Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, and is pursuing a degree in medicine or pharmacology. She graduated in 2009 from Kauai High School where she was President of The National Honor Society and Key Club, and an officer in many school clubs while still maintaining a G.P.A. of 4.02! She was on the swim team, and active in karate and hula throughout school. Dreana, we wish you luck in all your endeavors!

Rachel Anne Wright comes from Waimea High School where she had a G.P.A. of 4.089. She excelled in high school, was President of the National Honor Society, and is also an avid tennis player. Rachel is the fifth child in a family of seven children. Her four older siblings are all currently attending Brigham Young University in Utah, and she joined them this fall. Rachel wants to be an elementary school teacher and perhaps return to the Westside school system after attaining her teaching degree. Best wishes Rachel!

Caralyn Broyles started the Naval Academy in Anapolis, Maryland this fall. She graduated from Waimea High School where she earned a G.P.A of 4.028. She is very athletic and participated in cross-country, track and field, swimming and the JROTC. Caralyn is dynamite in a pretty petite package and can run like the wind. She intends to graduate with a degree in aeronautical-aerospace Engineering and also attend flight school to become an aviator and fly jets for the U.S. Military. Our hats off to you Pilot Caralyn!

Katy Talvi comes from Island School class of 2009, and now attends Cornell College in Iowa. She was accepted at 15 schools across the country before she chose Cornell College. Katy is theatrical, plays the piano, and dances hula and ballet. She swims and scuba dives and wants to spend time in the Peace Corp. Currently, she is studying cognitive science and neuroscience at Cornell. Best of luck Katy!

Wailana Waite is in her senior year at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She is pursuing a degree in graphic design. Through this medium, she plans to help raise public awareness about the importance of environmental conservation. Raised on the banks of the Hanalei River, and a past member of the Hanalei Canoe Club and Save Our Seas, Wailana is a tireless advocate for the well-being of the planet and a worthy recipient of the only scholarship we awarded to a college level student this year. Way to go Wailana!
